CHALLENGE
Wanting to improve patient care, a teaching hospital needed to convert an existing OR to a hybrid version that would allow angiographic access in an OR setting. Several steps such as locating a blockage, confirming patency of vessels, stent placement, and post-op testing could all be done in one visit to an OR, reducing the patient's number of visits and exposure to radiation.

The targeted OR had been renovated by RND 5 years prior and was small by OR standards. At that time, a roof column was removed to provide the clear area needed for the OR. In this project, the new angiographic C-arm was to be suspended from roof adding to the load. Air change rates had changed since previous renovation.

SOLUTION
By shifting adjacent support functions to nearby locations, the necessary space was provided to add the control room and imaging equipment. The control room was located within the OR protected by glass and the OR was lined with lead shielding. An OR light with multiple sections allowed the angiography unit rails to take predominate position over table. Fortunately, the rooftop tri-pod put in 5 years before provided adequate lift on room slab to accommodate the added load of the overhead mounted camera.
