CHALLENGE |
A large teaching hospital was experiencing an increase in out-patient procedure groups but missing appropriate waiting, pre-op and post-op holding facilities. These procedure groups had grown as separate units into adjoining spaces without comprehensive planning. Patients had to traverse public corridors between procedure areas an holding areas. An additional OR was needed to meet the demand. OR physician and staff dressing facilities were outdated and inadequate. An interventional radiololgy suite needed doubling. |

SOLUTION |
Starting with a Masterplanning effort, common functions (waiting, pre-op and post-op holding areas) were combined across the various groups yielding a 10,000 s.f. savings in precious "real estate". Procedure groups were positioned to receive patients into patient friendly pre-op holding areas that led directly into procedure room without traversing public ways. Comfortable waiting rooms allowed families to be close to patients before and after procedures. Carefully thought out, multiple phasing allowed renovation to be completed without interrupting hospital operations. |
